LHD Cargo Monorail System
AAI has developed and produced cargo monorail trains for LHD-1 through LHD-8 class ships. The Cargo Monorail System is a major part of the ship’s assault system. The shipboard cargo handling system is used to rapidly transfer palletized loads from stowage areas on board the LHD class amphibious assault ships to landing craft air cushions (LCAC) parked in the wet-well of the LHD.
The Cargo Monorail System is comprised of 2,700 feet of monorail, complete with 17 manual and/or hydraulic operated switches, a maintenance platform, and nine diesel-hydraulic powered trains. The trains each consist of four individual cars:
Each train is capable of handling two 3,000-pound palletized loads at hoisting speeds of 0 to 180 feet per minute and traversing speeds of 0 to 600 feet per minute. The train is powered by a 60 HP diesel engine. The LHD Cargo Monorail System meets the vibration requirements of MIL-STD-167-1 and -2 and the HI shock requirements of MIL-S-901C (Grade A).
