Performance-Based Logistics (PBL)
PBL: Buying Product Support Outcomes Performance-based logistics (PBL) is a successful military-contractor acquisition philosophy that focuses on the purchase of performance and outcomes in product support instead of the products and services alone. In PBL, a contractor earns incentives for meeting stringent performance goals established by the contracting agency, thereby ensuring a high level of system readiness for deployed systems.
- For warfighters, PBL means mission readiness because they know that AAI is providing a proven, seamless maintenance and supply system that supports them at all times.
- In the field, experienced AAI field service representatives perform maintenance activities and on-site support that enhance the military’s own capabilities.
- In depots, AAI technicians deliver high-volume repair capabilities executed through mature processes.
- PBL contributes improved weapon system performance, lower life cycle costs, accurate support data, and meaningful financial management for the armed services.
AAI and U.S. Army Win Defense Department PBL Award
The U.S. Army Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System program earned the first-ever special achievement award from the U.S. Defense Department for performance-based logistics contributions in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Readiness and mission success of Shadow systems, according to the Defense Department award, were demonstrated in the significant number of successful sorties flown to support the Global War on Terrorism. Shadow systems met all operational readiness, weapon system availability, and mission success requirements.
