F-16 Modular Simulated Aircraft Maintenance Trainer (MSAMT)

In early 2003, AAI received a contract from Rockwell Collins, formerly NLX, to design and produce simulation models of various parts of the F-16. State-of-the-art training technologies were used to create models of the Block 40’s and Block 50’s pneumatic/hydraulic system, electrical power system, environmental control system, and propulsion system trainer including the engine start system. The result was an immersive and interactive virtual image-based solution.

AAI’s simulation models are coded in C++ and execute under the training devices operating system. They are designed to support various training modes including lesson preparation, lecture and demonstration, and operational. The models are capable of running in real-time or compressed-time in all of the modes and can run, reset, freeze, and play-back operations. They are parameter driven to the greatest extent possible enabling the instructor to define the simulated training environment.

The models are capable of supporting normal, degraded, and emergency conditions by reflecting both the instructor-selected faults and the student reactions. The models also simulate subsystem components, LRUs, wiring, plumbing, and everything else that is necessary to support accurate and realistic responses to the enabled faults and subsequent student maintenance actions.

Model inputs come from the instructor-selected parametric values and fault states and the student maintenance actions performed on the student station’s graphic interface. Model outputs are used to drive the cockpit and the other aircraft indications and to fully interact with the required set of simulated support equipment.

The following eighteen items of simulated support equipment were supported:

  • Anti-Skid Test Set
  • Cabin Leakage Tester
  • CEDS Transfer Unit
  • ECS Test Set
  • Electrical Power Test Adapter
  • Electrical Power Test Set
  • Engine Start System Test Set
  • EPU Electrical Test Set
  • Hydraulic Brake Tester
  • Hydraulic Test Stand
  • Ignition Test Set
  • MLG Brake Pressure Assembly Test Set
  • Multimeter, AN/PSM-6
  • Multimeter, AN/PSM-37
  • Multimeter, Fluke-77
  • Oxygen Regulator Field Tester
  • Pressure Test Set/Cart
  • Pressurization Test Set

The MSAMT design employed commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and supports classroom-based theoretical and cognitive skills training for both entry-level and highly-developed, experienced F-16 maintenance personnel. The fully deployable system addresses all configuration variations of the F-16 Block 40 and Block 50 aircraft.
