In early 2003, AAI received a contract from Rockwell Collins Simulation & Training, formerly NLX, to design and produce simulation models of various F-16 parts. We used state-of-the-art training technologies to create models of the Block 40 and Block 50 pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical power, environmental control, engine start, and propulsion systems trainers. The result is an immersive, interactive, virtual image-based solution.
Our simulation models are programmed using C++, and execute under the operating system of the training devices. The models support various training modes including lesson preparation, lecture and demonstration, and operation. They can run in real time or compressed time, as well as run, reset, freeze, and playback operations. The models also are parameter-driven to enable instructors to define the simulated training environment.
AAI’s models can support normal, degraded, and emergency conditions by reflecting both the instructor-selected faults and the student reactions. They also simulate subsystem components, line replaceable units (LRUs) wiring, plumbing, and other systems to ensure accurate and realistic responses to the enabled faults, as well as the subsequent student maintenance actions.
Model inputs come from the instructor-selected parametric values and fault states, as well as maintenance actions performed by students. These inputs drive the cockpit and the other aircraft indications, and fully interact with simulated support equipment. In fact, our simulation models support more than 18 items of simulated support equipment from the anti-skid test set to the oxygen regulator field tester.
AAI’s MSAMT design uses commercial off-the-shelf hardware and supports classroom-based theoretical and cognitive skills training for both entry-level and experienced F-16 maintenance personnel. The fully deployable system addresses all configuration variations of the F-16 Block 40 and Block 50 aircraft.
